The HBX range sits a notch above Ifor Williams’ standard HB trailers, and the HBX511 is the largest double in that line – built for owners running two full-size horses rather than ponies or cobs. At up to 17.2hh per horse and a 2,700kg gross weight rating, it is aimed at the upper end of what a straight-load trailer can carry before you are into tri-axle or truck territory.

Where the standard HB range mixes aluminium framing with composite panels, the HBX511 steps up to all-aluminium construction throughout – lighter than steel-clad equivalents for the same strength, and it will not rust through the way an untreated steel-panelled trailer eventually will. On South African roads that weight saving is worth more than it looks on paper: a lighter empty trailer leaves more of your tow vehicle’s braked capacity for the horses themselves.

A centre partition, and breast and breeching bars, come standard rather than as extras – the bars are what stop a horse sliding forward under braking or back under acceleration. Buyers also choose between a built-in tack locker or a front ramp at purchase: a tack locker eats into towing length for storage, while a front ramp gives the calmer front-loading experience at the cost of that storage space.

A 2,700kg-rated trailer needs a genuinely capable tow vehicle and a driver’s licence code that covers the combination weight – check both before committing. As with all Ifor Williams stock, servicing and parts run through the brand’s appointed South African network. Confirm current dimensions, kerb weight and pricing for the specific unit we have in stock, since configuration changes the numbers.

Because the HBX511 carries a genuine 2,700kg rating, do not skip the paperwork side of ownership: beyond your own driver’s licence code, the trailer itself needs to be licensed and carry a valid trailer licence disc before it goes on public roads, the same as any other South African-registered trailer regardless of where it was built. We can point you to the right process for a unit this size.
