Bateson Derby Lightweight

Lightweight double horse trailer in the Bateson range, built for easier towing.

SKU: BAT-DERBY-01 Categories: , , , Tags: , ,

Derby Lightweight does exactly what the name promises: it takes Bateson’s double-horse trailer format and builds it to a lower overall weight than the Deauville or Ascot, aimed at owners whose tow vehicle is more modest, or who simply want to reduce fuel consumption and towing strain on a vehicle that could handle a heavier trailer but does not need to.

The trade-off with any lightweight trailer is worth understanding honestly rather than glossing over: a lighter build generally means a less heavily reinforced chassis and body than the top-of-range models in the same brand, which is a reasonable trade if your horses and typical towing distances are modest, but worth discussing with us if you are regularly moving larger horses or towing long distances at highway speed.

For a first trailer, or for owners with a smaller SUV or crossover-style tow vehicle rather than a full-size double-cab bakkie, the Derby Lightweight is often the more realistic match than assuming you need a heavier, fully specced double you will not comfortably tow. Lower weight also generally means easier reversing and manoeuvring in tight yard spaces, a genuine day-to-day benefit that does not show up on a spec sheet.

As with the rest of the Bateson range, this is a steel-chassis build, so build a regular wash-down and rust-check routine into your maintenance, particularly in coastal or high-rainfall areas. Contact us to confirm current pricing, exact weight and your tow vehicle’s suitability before you buy.

Being a lighter build does not change the legal basics: the Derby Lightweight still needs a valid South African trailer licence disc before it goes on public roads, renewed annually like any other trailer regardless of weight class. If your tow vehicle is on the smaller side, it is worth confirming its exact braked towing figure with the manufacturer or a dealer rather than relying on a general vehicle brochure, since even a lightweight trailer needs a genuinely rated tow vehicle behind it.
