Ifor Williams HB506

Double horsebox for two horses up to 16.2hh, six inches higher and an inch wider than its predecessor for more room for larger animals.

The HB506 is the direct evolution of one of Ifor Williams’ longest-running double trailers, and the changes from its predecessor are small on paper but noticeable in the stall: six inches more height and an extra inch of width. If you have watched a 16hh horse duck its head under a low trailer roof, you will understand why that matters more than it sounds – it is the difference between a horse standing relaxed and one that is tense and scrambling for room the whole trip.

It carries two horses up to 16.2hh, which puts it squarely in the most common bracket for South African leisure and competition riders running warmbloods, Boerperds or similar. Construction is standard Ifor Williams: galvanised steel chassis, aluminium-framed body, composite panelling – a combination chosen specifically because it does not rust through the way older all-steel trailers do after a few Highveld winters or a season near the coast.

Because it is a refinement of an established model rather than a new design, the HB506 benefits from a long track record – parts, tyres and common replacement components are well understood by Ifor Williams’ South African service network, which matters when you are trying to get a trailer roadworthy again in a hurry before an event.

The extra headroom does not change the towing maths: this is still a two-horse trailer, and your tow vehicle needs a braked towing capacity that comfortably covers the loaded weight of two horses plus tack, not just the empty trailer weight quoted in brochures. If you are upgrading from an older HB model, check your current towbar and electrics are still compatible. Get in touch for the exact dimensions, kerb weight and price on the unit currently in stock.

As with any new trailer brought into South Africa, factor in the licensing side before delivery day: a trailer licence disc and, where applicable, roadworthy documentation need to be sorted before the HB506 can legally go on public roads. We can talk you through what is needed so it is ready to tow the day you collect it.
